Origin note:Named by Cactus Jones after Pala, the Southern California town the cutting shipped from: he bought it on eBay and the return address supplied the name. So the locality records where the seller was, not where the plant originated.
STORY
Cactus Jones bought the cutting on eBay. When the package arrived, the return address said Pala — that was the name of the town the cutting shipped from. He named the plant after the town on the box. This corrects my earlier inference. Pala's name records where a package was mailed from, not where the plant is genetically from. No collection data, no mother-stand location, no lineage. Dave adds that he himself lives in the town of Pala, and that he has never seen the mother plant — "someone has it hidden away somewhere." That last point matters for your Pala/Oceanside question: if the Pala mother has never been located or photographed, the only way to test the Oceanside hypothesis is by comparing the propagated material, not by tracing it back.

He suspects it is the same plant as Oceanside , or close offspring of it. Geographically that is very plausible: Pala and Oceanside are both in North San Diego County, roughly 25 miles apart.
